The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is taught in Grades 3 and 4.
Children spend time in the garden working with and learning about plants, in particular the production of food. Using seeds, cuttings and seedlings they learn about the needs of different plants through observation and discussion. Watering, composting, and care of worms are integral parts of each session.
The students also spend time in the kitchen, reading and following recipes, with a strong focus on using fresh vegetables and herbs. There is a direct connection between harvests and kitchen tasks.
The safe use of tools is taught, for example safe knife skills, and healthy eating choices are promoted.
Recipes are shared with all school families through the school newsletter.
During all sessions the development of skills like teamwork, communication, experimentation, and reflection is promoted.
